Melbourne Ratings pro-punter Trevor Lawson brings you his VRC St Leger preview.
Put a line through…
Plenty who are outclassed here and don’t have what’s required to win. I’ve crossed out Zesto (5), Longclaw (6), Wil John (8), Fioritura (9), Bakery Hill (10), Navarro Lad (11), Miner’s Miss (13), Miss France (14), Exclusively Ours (15) and the emergency It’s Semi Sweet (17).
1 Stars Of Carrum (Robbie Laing / Craig Williams)
Barrier 12, 57kg
Ran honestly in the Mornington Cup two starts back, then struggled in the wet last start. Has had the right prep for this trip. Can run to near best.
2 Transact (Waterhouse & Bott / Luke Currie)
Barrier 10, 57kg
Stable has a good record in this race. Progressing nicely, had a good prep and looks suited out to this trip.
3 American In Paris (Symon Wilde / Andrew Mallyon)
Barrier 1, 57kg
Well held last start. Would need to improve dramatically to beat Transact.
4 Budd Fox (Henry Dwyer / Damien Thornton)
Barrier 13, 57kg
Ran nicely two starts back, then back in trip last start. Steps back up in distance here, has rough claims.
7 Convict Sam (Archie Alexander / Jordan Childs)
Barrier 7, 57kg
Natural staying type. Ran okay last start before peaking on run late. Has rough claims.
12 Rock Dove (James Cummings / Jamie Kah)
Barrier 14, 55kg
Been up a long time. Did run well in Tasmania in February in a Listed race. Close fifth in the Adrian Knox at Randwick – doesn’t have to run that figure to be competitive here.
16 Jenstar (David Brideoake / Damien Oliver)
Barrier 8, 55kg
Staying type that’s improved each run. Good effort last start when took off a bit early. Gets good senior rider on. Has claims at good odds.
I’ve got Stars of Carrum on top from Transact and Rock Dove. The toppy should be hard to beat, but looks well under the odds.
From a betting point of view, Rock Dove and Jenstar look like small overs.
