Melbourne racing pro-punter Trevor Lawson brings you his Winter Championship Final preview from Flemington.
#1 Mr Marathon Man (Michael Moroney / Damien Oliver)
Barrier 9, 60kg
Terrific win at third start in Australia when charging home from the back. Had to make all the running himself to get into the race. Similar profile here, but is up to it.
#2 Hellova Street (Scott Brunton / Jason Maskiell)
Barrier 10, 59.5kg
Looked slightly disappointing when resuming, but was drawn inside with an inexperienced jockey. Steps to 1600m here and Maskiell has a good record on the horse. Will be in it for a long way.
#3 Another Coldie (Symon Wilde / Damien Thornton)
Barrier 11, 58kg
#4 Waging War (Macdonald & Gluyas / Craig Williams)
Barrier 14, 56.5kg
Terrific effort on pace behind Mr Marathon Man last start. Drawn wide but should roll forward. Williams on, good record this trip.
#5 Federal (James Cummings / Dwayne Dunn)
Barrier 3, 55.5kg
Ran on well first-up when big odds. Did nothing last start but pulled up with a poor recovery. 1600m is a query and will get back on the inside. Prefer others.
#6 Radipole (Michael Moroney / Michael Dee)
Barrier 4, 55.5kg
Honest run first-up over 1400m. 28 days between runs here. Steps to this trip where he’s run well in the past, though some time back. Rough chance at big odds.
#7 Spanner Head (Archie Alexander / Declan Bates)
Barrier 6, 54kg
Had a perfect trail two starts back, then didn’t do much last start on soft ground. Query for me at the mile in this class.
#8 Mamzelle Tess (Leon & Troy Corstens / Patrick Moloney)
Barrier 12, 54kg
Hard horse to get a line on with ratings all over the place. Well beaten last start by a roughie over 1400m. Steps to the mile here but slight query. Prefer others.
#9 Reykjavik (Lindsey Smith / Linda Meech)
Barrier 2, 54kg
Terrific run at first Victorian start at Swan Hill, charging home late with good sectionals. Got home hard ast start with experienced jockey. Looks suited to this trip even though has only been to it once in his career.
#10 Romancer (Grahame Begg / Dean Yendall)
Barrier 8, 54kg
Two runs back for new trainer, both good. Has done better figures in the past. Can improve here third-up out to the trip.
#11 Holbien (Steve Richards / Brian Park)
Barrier 15, 54kg
Disappointing galloper who never seems to get the job done. First time at the trip.
#12 Bad Wolf (Lloyd Kennewell / Zac Spain)
Barrier 13, 54kg
Had run of race first-up when produced peak ratings. Busted big time last start. Now steps to the mile but have to assume he can only do what he has. Prefer others.
#13 Royal Order (Michael Kent / Beau Mertens)
Barrier 1, 54kg
Ran okay first up. Second-up at a mile. Inside barrier a concern – will be well back on the fence which looks a negative.
#14 Boxachocolates (Stephen Brown / Stephen Baster)
Barrier 5, 54kg
Ran okay last start from a good draw. Inconsistent type but does have ability if running to best.
#15 Snipes (Brent Stanley / Harry Coffey)
Barrier 7, 54kg
Improving run last start off two poor performances previously. Was on home track though, not sure if he can hold here.
I’ve got Waging War (4) on top from Mr Marathon Man (1) and Hellova Street (2). All look a reasonable price as well, without being huge overs just at the moment.
