The Winx Guineas – previously known as the Sunshine Coast Guineas – is a Group 3 race for three-year-olds over 1600 metres during the Queensland Winter Racing Carnival. Total prizemoney is $175,000. The race was renamed after superstar mare Winx in 2020 – her amazing win in the 2015 event kickstarted her famous 33-race winning streak.
Winx Guineas 2022: Alfie’s preview
Track The BOM has 15 – 20mm of rain predicted for Friday, and 20 – 35mm on race day. Given this I’ll work off a track that is in the heavy range. The rail is in the true – last time with a true rail position and an official track rating of Heavy 9, the fence was off and winners came from off-pace… especially as the day went on.
Speed The pace will be fast. Indiscreetly and Ashgrove will lead, Majestic Colour will try to cross, as will Rayjen. Battelton will get a run a couple lengths off the lead.

2 Battleton [$2.45] is yet to see a real wet track, so the only doubt about him is what he can do on the heavy. Other than that I have him clear favourite.
10 Indiscreetly [$7] is making a big step-up in distance and is second-up. I think you need a good fitness base for a fast-run, wet 1600m contest. Leading may be difficult.
6 Majestic Colour [$7.50] is in winning from and has a good jockey on. The map is difficult, but he has form in wet conditions. He’s a chance.
1 Subterranean [$8.50] was placed in a Group 3 last August but hasn’t measured up in a Group race since, being beaten by a combined 23 lengths in three races.
5 Ashgrove [$11] has been racing in black-type company. He’s fifth-up and should be fit, but he will need to improve and for Battelton to not handle the ground for him to win.
4 Whitewater [$13] will be fit, but the rise in class might be too much. He will be coming wide late which is a tick. The breeding says he should handle the going, so he’s not the worst in the race.
“Winx is last, she’ll have to come past the 17 of them”

13 Notions [$20] is dual nominated in Sydney. She broke her maiden on an official Heavy track. The 300m step-up in distance here is a concern in really wet conditions.
3 Collays Spirit [$71] is fit and his best rating is on a Heavy 9. But he may just be a class below these.
I have a bit of a long tail in this race and would say a win from the rest would surprise: 14 Sebrings Rose [$34], 12 Rose Of Duporth [$61], 11 Rayjen [$31], 7 Tarex [$17], 8 Master Marko [$81], 15 Champagne Pop [$31], 16 Lovin De Quo [$151], 9 Prince Alby [$151]
Best Bet Battleton
Battelton is certainly the one for mine. The only query is the wet. He’s the class horse, bringing the best figures in, is fit and this is his third run at Group 3 level in a row. I’m backing him, but to play it safe I will just be staking a little less on the heavy track.
