winx stakes

The Winx Stakes is the first Group 1 race of the racing season, with the 2021 edition to be run at Randwick on Saturday, August 21st.

Formerly known as the Warwick Stakes, the race was renamed the Winx Stakes – and upgraded to Group 1 status – in 2018 in honour of the champion mare. Winx won the race three times in a row from 2016 to 2018, during her record-breaking unbeaten streak.

The Winx Stakes is run over 1400 metres and is often used as a campaign-starter for many star horses who are headed to some of the Spring Carnival’s biggest races. As a result, punters can usually expect a high-quality field, but with the majority of entrants having their first run for the preparation. This can make for somewhat of a form challenge, with no recent performances to go on and horses and different stages of fitness.

KOLDING is the only horse with a run under his belt this prep so far! Okay and better for the run resuming, loves this track and trip and maps to get his chance here. Top rater for me.

VERRY ELLEEGANT is the favourite in the race and the queen of the turf in Australia since Winx retired. She won this race last year on a Soft 6 going 113. The query for me is the drier track here, but she’s the class runner of the race.

THINK IT OVER is first-up off 126 days. He won a trial well recently and won well first-up last prep. From the good draw he can get a pretty good run into the race, too. Goes well.

IMAGING is first-up off 70 days, so just a short spell. Went to a career peak first-up last prep at Caulfield in February, going 114, and on that he’s a chance here. However he is a little older now again. Maps very well though.

CASCADIAN is first-up off 119 days. His trial was just average recently and he is a seven-year-old, however at his best from last prep (Randwick 1600m, Soft 6) he would be a chance here. His fresh record is just fair though.

KEIAI NAUTIQUE is a Japanese visitor, first-up for new camp in Australia. He’s a seven-year-old but on some of his figures in Japan he is good enough to win this, and he is a massive price. Hard to know how he’s going but at cricket score odds he’s worth a little spec.

MOUNGA is first-up off 126 days. A very talented horse who probably has not shown us his top yet, but who the market always prices as though he is just about to. Has gone well fresh in both campaigns.

STAR OF THE SEAS is first-up off 133 days. Last prep first-up was just average, but he peaked first-up in the previous campaign. He is a seven-year-old now but showed with his second-up Blamey win last prep that he is still racing well. It would be hard to be super keen here though without knowing how he’s going. No trial.
