Start to dig into the online world of sports betting, and you’ll quickly become familiar with some of the big players. One voice particularly prevalent on social media is known simply as “Spanky”. Spanky is a professional sports bettor and the host of ‘Be Better Bettors’, a podcast where he shares his thoughts on betting and interviews other professional punters.
But who is Spanky, and what can we learn from him? One of our analysts at Champion Bets was lucky enough to ask him for his top betting tips.
Spanky is actually Gadoon Kryollos, a New Jersey native and long-time professional punter. He grew up around betting and it caught his eye early – he was fascinated by the illegal dice games that took place out the back of a local carnival he used to attend as a child.
After school, Spanky studied computer science at university and worked in banking. But his banking career soon took a back seat to his betting, and he was spending every spare hour devising and researching approaches to make money in betting markets.
One of Spanky’s early betting plays was to look for ‘middles’, where different sportsbooks would have different lines on a game. For example, he’d find a game where one book was betting the Lakers +9.5, and another where the Lakers were +6.5. He’d bet the Lakers with one book, and against them on the other book. The ultimate aim was to win both bets – which obviously didn’t happen often… but when it did, it was a big payday. This approach proved successful for Spanky and was a preview of how he’d approach sports betting in the years to come.
Of course, finding effective middles these days is very, very difficult – all sportsbooks are online and rapidly move the line within seconds of each other.
Spanky has a relatively public profile compared to many of his pro betting colleagues – he hosts the ‘Be Better Bettors’ podcast and BetBash, a now-annual industry conference in Las Vegas for professional bettors. He doesn’t, however, reveal a lot about his own betting or how he does it.
Listen to him however and you’ll soon see that much of his betting revolves around finding and exploiting weak lines – an approach that is very popular in the USA. The approach places less of a focus on traditional form analysis (or handicapping, as it’s known in the USA), and instead looks to exploit betting lines that or too high or too low, and likely to move. The bettor looks to lock in the weaker line and ensure they beat the closing line. It’s similar to beating the starting price in horse racing. Do that for long enough and you’ll end up in front.
“We’re looking at line movement and trying to beat that closing number,” Spanky told covers.com in 2019.
“That’s the most important thing: beating the closing number. ‘Cause if you beat the closing number, that means you’re beating the market and you’re going to make money long term.”
It is really a shame winning bettors are shown the door at New Jersey’s new sports books but losers are welcomed with open arms. @steveedelsonapp @AsburyParkPress @DavidPurdum @News12NJ @StevePoliti @megbakertv @VSiNLive @BFawkesESPN @ActionNetworkHQ pic.twitter.com/RpZQlBG0Ap

He met Spanky and plenty of other sharp punters there, and has also had the chance to chat to Spanky in online forums. Of course, Rod asked Spanky for his best advice on how to become a successful sports bettor. Spanky’s response covered three main points:
