Broncos v Souths: NRL Round 1

This is another game where injury news went against us after members had an early bet. Star Broncos recruit Adam Reynolds and rugged lock Kobe Hetherington were both struck down with COVID before last weekend. It is highly unlikely either will play this weekend, but that is the risk betting ahead of time in this environment.

I do not think it will be as big of a deal as the headlines are making out. I think the media is upset that they cannot plug the story line of Reynolds against his old team, but from a performance perspective, Reynolds had not played in either trial, and the Broncos had few decent replacement options to choose from.

It looks like Billy Walters and Albert Kelly will get first crack to show their stuff and based on Kelly’s 2021 form and Billy’s trial form, I think this is a good call.

Although I am sure some think Coach Walters is playing favourites choosing his son, I thought Billy had some quality touches in his trials and I always thought he should have been given more of a shot during his time at Wests.

I am however a little worried about the fact that Cameron Murray is lining up for Souths. With the same surgery as Cleary, I thought he would also be held back for a week or two, but he looks set to line up.

But as I explained when I bet against them in the Charity Shield, I do think Souths is the team that has been the most weakened during the off season. They did not pick up any new players of significance, while they lost Coach Bennett, Adam Reynolds and Dane Gagai. Time will tell whether that sends them down the table.

Playing at home in front of a crowd that has had two years of disappointment, I think a fired-up Broncos will be highly competitive here.

I am tempted to back the Broncos to win this, however I think the experience of stars like Walker, Cook and Murray may just be enough to nab the win for the away team.

Broncos v Souths: Predicted score
