Race 5: The Big Easy – Ran on strongly from the back producing the 2nd / 2nd / 7th / 2nd quickest late splits of the day. Previous run was solid as well. Just needs to draw a barrier so can settle handier in the run. Look for over 1400m.

Race 6: Liqueuro – Worked early to find the front, got away on the home turn then eased down late. Hard to see anything from behind him turning the tables in the St Leger.

Caulfield: Sat 3 Apr

Melbourne Racing Results: Trev’s Blackbookers

Race 2: Agreeable – Ran on well from well back, running top 20 splits for last 400 and 200 of the day. Still looks to be on the up. Could go up in class if need be to find suitable race.

Bendigo: Sat 27 Mar

Melbourne Racing Results: Trev’s Blackbookers

Race 6: Liqueuro, Explosive Jack – Both came through solidly run staying race. Both look progressive staying types. Definitely St Leger and / or SA Derby types.

Mornington Cup Day (Sat 20 Mar)

Melbourne Racing Results: Trev’s Blackbookers

Race 6: Black Penn – Shuffled back at vital stage before running similar last 400m and 200m sectionals as the winner. Look for in a similar grade and trip next time.

Race 9: Flandersrain – Won in high-rating race first-up, then a little flat last start. Returned to peak here, was very impressive and can run on the pace. Keep following.

And one from Friday night at Moonee Valley

Moonee Valley: All-Star Mile Day (Sat 13 Mar)

Melbourne Racing Results: Trev’s Blackbookers

Race 4: Ancestry – Terrific effort on the pace. Not sure he’s a G1 horse but he can win a G2 race if he gets conditions to suit.

Race 4: Riddle Me That – Returned with the best last 1000 / 800 / 600 and second best last 400 and 200 of the day. 1400m next start is a perfect set up.

Caulfield: Blue Diamond Stakes Day (Sat 20 Feb)

Melbourne Racing Results: Trev’s Blackbookers

Race 3: Impecunious – No luck in straight, arguably should have won. Will improve again. Positives would be a bigger track, and possibly a jockey change.

Race 4: Rich Hips – Went out for a spell producing a peak figure. Has returned running a new peak, can win a nice race this prep.

Race 9: Steel Prince – Flatfooted when the sprint came on at 600m but kept working to the line well. Can improve up in trip next start.

Flemington: Black Caviar Lightning Day (Sat 13 Feb)

Melbourne Racing Results: Trev’s Blackbookers

Race 7: Tagaloa – Sat handy in fast-run race where they went out over six lengths quicker than the class par. And was still able to run home in the sixth-quickest last 200m of the day. Looks like 1600m will suit next. Best runs are in fast run races. Hard to beat in the Australian Guineas if he runs.

Caulfield: CF Orr Stakes Day (Sat 6 Feb)

Melbourne Racing Results: Trev’s Blackbookers

Race 7: Probabeel – Sat wide throughout on an even tempo, strong through line with 60 kgs. Will improve again through prep.

Caulfield: Sat 30 Jan

Melbourne Racing Results: Trev’s Blackbookers

Race 4: Enthaar – Pretty obvious one but looks the best of the raced two-year-olds this season in Vic. Ran the quickest last 800m and 600m of the day before being throttled down late. Still running third-best last 400m and fifth-best last 200m of the day.

Race 8: Barbie’s Fox – Made good ground from the back. Ready to run to best now, look for in similar class 1400-1600m races.

Flemington: Sat 9 Jan

Melbourne Racing Results: Trev’s Blackbookers

Race 2: Milton Park – Nice return, running only slightly slower overall time than the Listed race. Was strong through the line. Despite its SP price being a slight drag, it looks to be in for a good prep, can definitely win this prep 1600m.

Race 3: Island Joy – Another winner with a big SP. Returned a big figure out of a fast run race, running sixth-quickest last 200m of the day. That was at least 0.38 sec quicker than anything else in the race, and it was her first time at 1600m. Can win again in the next couple of runs.

Race 5: Defibrillate – Ran to a new level on Saturday. Has a terrific turn of foot . Quickest last 400m and second-quickest last 200m of the day, and still looks to be on the up. Will win again soon.

Caulfield: Sat 26 Dec

Melbourne Racing Results: Trev’s Blackbookers

Race 3: Ayrton – Ran 0.7 quicker overall time quicker than the B78 horses. Was almost 9 lengths quicker than the class benchmark winning with its head on its chest. Outside a legitimate G1 race next start, it should win again easily.

Race 8: Mosh Music – Hit the line hard running the quickest last 600, 400 and 200 of the day. Ready now for 2000m.

Flemington: Sat 19 Dec

Melbourne Racing Results: Trev’s Blackbookers

Race 2: Zion – Held up at 400m, eased to outside losing ground and then charged late, running 3rd quickest last 400 and 200 of the day. Look for him over 1400m.

Race 4: Skiddaw – Rated peak figure last start at BRAT, rated down on Saturday but was terrific effort. Was the only on-pacer to hold on in a quickly run race where they went over 11 lengths quicker than the class par time to the 600m, can bounce back to previous rating next start. Might be a bonus going up in trip.

Pakenham Cup Day (5 Dec)

Melbourne Racing Results: Trev’s Blackbookers

Race 3: Zachaz – Powered away last 200m, running quickest splits of the race from the 600m. Still looks to be on the up. Can win a better class race this prep in the 2000m range.

Race 4: Astraeus – Terrific effort on pace in a race run with quick splits early. Fought on well to the line. Can run to previous rating next start if conditions suit.

Moonee Valley: Sat 28th Nov

Melbourne Racing Results: Trev’s Blackbookers

Race 1: Seb Song – Strong through the line, can improve again and win another city race this distance range.

Race 4: Ethical Solution – Held on well to be the best of the on-pacers in a fast run race. Can improve again similar trip and class.

Ballarat Cup Day (21 Nov)

Melbourne Racing Results: Trev’s Blackbookers

Race 1: Riding The Wave – Ran on well from the back, closing well against the pattern of the day. Has the ability to sit handy in the run. Can improve again next start out in trip to 1200-1400m.

Race 6: Snapdancer – Brilliant return, winning by a margin off a wide run. In for a good prep, has run well in races up to 1600m. Follow for prep.

Melbourne Cup Carnival (Flemington)

Melbourne Racing Results: Trev’s Blackbookers

It’s difficult to find a lot of blackbookers in Cup week, because for almost horses it’s their grand final… so they may well be headed stright to to paddock.

So Trev has put together those he’s picked out over the four days of the Flemington carnival…

Melbourne Cup Day

Race 8: Gold Fields – In career best form. Ridden back on, Cup day he was the best of the closer. Can win a 1600m -1800m race in the next few weeks. Can race on the pace.

Oaks Day

Race 1: Tralee Rose – Won nicely on Oaks Day over 1700m. Ready for 2000m next start, can improve again.

Race 2: Hang Man – Ran well behind Irish Flame third-up. Had no luck fourth-up last prep at 2000m, but has won fourth-up twice in his career. Should pop up in the next couple of weeks and run to his best.

Stakes Day

Race 2: Shelby Cobra – Impressive winner on the last day over 1400m. Jockey thought that would be his ceiling distance wise. Should appear again in the next couple of weeks.

Race 4: Right You Are – Hit the line well, looked very one-paced. 2000m looks ideal third up.

Race 9: Meteorite – Total forgive down the straight in the last race of the carnival. Never travelled well and always struggling to go straight. Back around a bend for him and can run to best.

Caulfield Guineas Day (10 Oct)

Melbourne Racing Results: Trev’s Blackbookers

Track played well. Horses could win from anywhere, just needed to be at least one off the fence in the straight.

Race 7: Agreeable – Captain Obvious here, but she keeps hitting the line well. Looks to need 2000m+ and a better draw. The Wakeful looks a nice race for her, then the Oaks.

Race 8: Grandslam – Huge effort on the pace. He run 12 lengths + inside the class par for the first 1000m, and then kept fighting on well in the straight. Full brother to Caulfield Cup winner Jameka. Look toward 2000m Vase at Moonee Valley, then the Derby.

Race 9: Reykjavik – Absolutely flying. Good last start then held up in the straight. Had to go back to last from the barrier. Ran seco-d quickest last 200m of the day. Like to see him come back in class, at 1600m and from a better barrier. Hard to beat if he got a wet track over the spring – that would be a bonus.

Flemington: Turnbull Stakes Day (3 Oct)

Melbourne Racing Results: Trev’s Blackbookers

Race 6: Steel Prince – Sat wide off a quick tempo and kept coming in the straight. Not Cups standard, but can definitely feature in the lead-ups.

Race 9: Young Werther – Difficult to ride in the straight but hit the line well. Will improve again out to 2000m with winkers or blinkers on.

Caulfield: Underwood Stakes Day (26 Sep)

Melbourne Racing Results: Trev’s Blackbookers

Rain during the day, so times got a little slower as day went on. Riders avoided the inside section in the straight as the day went on.

Race 2: Power Scheme – Ran on nicely in the straight first-up, and produced peak figure second-up last prep. Look for a 1600m restricted race.

Race 3: Saracen Knight – Suited by the fast tempo, but was held up in the straight and stood the leaders a huge margin. Last 200m was only the 28th quickest of the day, but he was over 0.5 seconds quicker than any other runner in the race. Looks a progressive type.

Caulfield: Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes Day (19 Sep)

Melbourne Racing Results: Trev’s Blackbookers

Race 8: Reykjavik – Hit the line hard late after having an interrupted run in the straight. Not sure he’s G1 class, but there are plenty of 1600m races coming up that should suit.

Race 8: Superstorm – Ran third in the All Star mile third-up from a spell in the autumn. Has had two runs back now. Ready to peak at 1600m next start. Good barrier would be a bonus.

Flemington: Makybe Diva Stakes Day (12 Sep)

Melbourne Racing Results: Trev’s Blackbookers

After forecasts of heavy rain, not much arrived and the track played well. I have it slightly better than the official rating – I think it was closer to a Good 3 for most of the day, slowing to a Good 4 late.

Race 3: Arcadia Queen – The obvious one. Hit the line well, look for at the mile next start.

Race 6: Adelaide Ace – Provided it gets a decent draw, it’ll be dangerous next start at 1600m – 1700m.

Moonee Valley: Sat 5th Sep

Melbourne Racing Results: Trev’s Blackbookers

The track played well. You could basically win from anywhere and the speed was tempo-related in all races.

Race 4: Junipal – Still improving and can win a better race than this.

Race 5: Showmanship – Going well and can go better again. Will be very competitive in the G1 Rupert Clarke if they go there.

Caulfield: Memsie Stakes Day (29 Aug)

Melbourne Racing Results: Trev’s Blackbookers

Track raced between a Good 3 and Good 4. All winners were at least three-wide from the 400m to the post. Can forgive horses that raced without cover down the side with the northerly blowing.

Race 2: Windstorm – Given no hope when eased right back to near tail at the start. Ran fifth-quickest last 600m of the day and second-quickest last 200m. Look for senior rider back on next time and better draw.

Race 4: Nonconformist – Terrific return, went back from wide barrier and rattled home in 16th-best last 200m of the day, when only warming up late. Look for at 1600m – 1700m next start from a better draw. A race like the JRA Cup at The Valley at the end of September looks a good race for him.

Race 7: Flying Award – Another horse who went well back from the barriers. Better draw and up in trip and he can win some nice races.

Caulfield: Sat 15 Aug

Melbourne Racing Results: Trev’s Blackbookers

Track raced in the Soft 5 – Slow 6 range. Seven of nine winners were two lengths or closer to the lead at the 800m mark. All the winners were at least three-wide from the 400m to the finish.

Race 7: Age Of Chivalry – Returned well, producing a good figure. Generally steps of it’s first-up rating second-up. Looking for him in a 1400m race second-up.

Race 9: Showmanship – Was short odds and didn’t win by a lot, but the run had a lot of merit. Only two horses that won were further back than two lengths off the lead at the 800m  – Viridine in Race 7 who was three lengths off, and Showmanship who was 4.6 lengths off. Showmanship only got clear in the last 200m and was powering at the line. Ran the quickest last 200m of the day. Can win a good race, especially down in the weights. Want to follow.

Moonee Valley: Sat 1 Aug

Melbourne Racing Results: Trev’s Blackbookers

The track played well. Bias was tempo related. Times suggest the track was a Soft 5, in line with the official rating.

Race 4: Brooklyn Hustle – Had an easy kill over a moderate lot. Did it easily, running the quickest last 800, 600 and 400 of the day. Looked to have more to give. Can improve during its prep. Can win a group mares race over 1200m.

Race 5: Sovereign Award – Ran good time and can win again, especially if she comes back to the Valley. Could win in open class if down in the weights.

Race 5: West Wind – Solid. Would prefer her at a similar trip and same grade, on a bigger track. Flemington or Caulfield would be ideal.

Caulfield: Sat 25 Jul

Melbourne Racing Results: Trev’s Blackbookers

The track raced terrific. There was no bias and the ground raced the better side of Good 4. Times were good.

Race 7: Streets Of Avalon – Terrific return. Fought on hard all the way to the line. Will be hard to beat in the early WFA races, which are full of stayers resuming.

Race 9: Savvy Lad – Resuming in second Australian prep. Badly checked down the side and kept fighting on well to line. Can pick up a race or two this prep.

Flemington: Sat 18 Jul

Melbourne Racing Results: Trev’s Blackbookers

Race 7: Al Galayel – Got well back from barrier before hitting line hard late. Look for distance up to 2000m next start, with a better barrier draw.

Race 9: Orleans Rock – Sound return. Look for in 1400m race on a wet track.

Caulfield: Sat 11 Jul

Melbourne Racing Results: Trev’s Blackbookers

Track was downgraded several times during the day. Started off a Soft 6 and the last race was run on a Heavy 8. They got away from the fence from early on. Was an advantage to be midfield to forward in the run.

Race 2: Our Campana – resuming, in for a good prep.

Race 2: Miss Iano – loves the wet, needs a bias that suits closers.

Race 3: Tavidance – terrific second-up off a long spell and still looks to be on the up. Can step again out to 1600m next start.

Race 5: Mystery Shot – stating the obvious, but hasn’t its ceiling yet and will win better races.

Flemington: Sat 4 Jul

Melbourne Racing Results: Trev’s Blackbookers

Bias: Track raced in the Dead 5 range. Six of the nine of the winners were in lanes 3 – 7 at the 400m mark. All winners were midfield or better from the 600m mark.

Race 7: Stretto – Terrific effort sitting three-wide on a solid speed in third position. Fought on well to be beaten 1.3 lengths. First two horses in the run were beaten 14.5 lengths and 18.2 lengths and were single figures at Betfair SP. Look for it in another 1600m run.

Caulfield: Sat 27 Jun

Melbourne Racing Results: Trev’s Blackbookers

Bias: Track raced as I had predicted. Five winners were in lane 2 at the 800m – 600m. 8/9 winners settled in a forward position on the map.

Race 3: Splendoronthegrass – Went back to last from the barrier and hooked out wide in straight. Best closer in the race, against the bias.

Race 6: Elderflower – Was the best of the on-pacers in a solidly-run race. Can improve off that run with a similar setup in race of lesser tempo.

Race 8: Creedence :Went back from the barrier giving it little chance in the race. Ran 5th / 2nd / 3rd fastest for the day for the last 600/400/200. Like to see at a similar distance, with a better draw where it can take up a forward position.

Flemington: Sat 20 Jun

Melbourne Racing Results: Trev’s Blackbookers

Bias: Track played well. Even spread of barriers by category. They were out in the wide lanes for the straight races.

Race 4: Right You Are – Had to go back from wide barrier. Look for it if drawn better next run over a  similar trip. Can step to new level.

Race 6: Lord Belvedere – Was coming off a 49 day break. Terrific training performance, should be able to step off this rating at next start in two weeks over a similar trip.

Race 7: Front Page – Untapped soft win. Can win again and should be able to step again.

Moonee Valley: Sat 13 Jun

Melbourne Racing Results: Trev’s Blackbookers

Bias: Savage on-pace inside bias. Look for any horses that defied that pattern going forward.

Race 1: Sense Of Honour – Went back from barrier and made good ground against the bias, running the quickest last 600m, 400m and 200m of the day. 1400m from a better draw looks ideal.

Race 5: Sansom – Resumed with a nice run, hitting the line well away from the inside. Ran the second-quickest last 800m of the day. Knocked up late. 1200m next start looks ideal.

Flemington: Sat 6 Jun

Melbourne Racing Results: Trev’s Blackbookers

Bias: Only one winner drew Barrier 3 or inside on the day (Jolly Sailor in the last). It was a disadvantage to be back past midfield on the day. The track otherwise raced relatively even.

Race 4: Holbein – raced on pace in solidly run BM78. Race rated well. Would like to see in a 1400m race, up in class and down in weight. .

Race 6: Massaf – has now had the required run at the distance range and can bounce next start at a similar distance

Race 8: Haunted – sat wide throughout on a good tempo, is now ready to win at this trip.

Caulfield: Sat 30 May

Melbourne Racing Results: Trev’s Blackbookers

Bias: Rail was out 9m with the track having marking on the inside lanes. 8 of the 9 winners drew inside barrier 7. 8 of the 9 winners were in lanes 5-11 at the 400. So look for horses than made ground from the 400 that were on the inside 3 lanes.

Race 2: Broadwayandfourth – hit the line well over 1100m, running the best last 800 and 600 and second-best last 400 and 200m of the day. Could now be ready for 1400m again.

Race 5: Tahitian Dancer – no luck in the straight when held up going for a run in the inferior ground. No luck start before. Hitting peak fitness and can run to best next start in the right grade.

Flemington: Sat 23 May

Melbourne Racing Results: Trev’s Blackbookers

Bias: Only one winner was on the fence at the 600m. Horses got wider after race 3 in circle races. Straight race winners were all wide on track. Times suggest track in Slow 7 range.

Race 3: Diaquin – ran on well from back in early race, when nothing had made ground out wide. Back up to 1600m and a wet track look ideal.

Race 4: El Questro – returned with good performance. Was never in the A-ground. Loves wet tracks .Ran peak figure second-up last prep. Follow on wet tracks

Race 7: Prepared to forgive Duke of Plumpton and Aussie Nugget. The former was never in the A-ground and fought on well. Loves wet. The latter didn’t have much luck but would prefer no worse than Dead 5.

Race 8: Shot Of Irish – no peace in front, never wide enough in the straight. Similar trip, wet track, on-pace suited, with stronger rider.

Flemington: Andrew Ramsden Race Day (16 May)

Melbourne Racing Results: Trev’s Blackbookers

Race 4: Orleans Rock – held up in the straight until the 300m, then ran best last 600, 400 and 200 of the race. Look for in similar class, grows a leg in the wet.

Race 7: Chapada – looked to hit the lead a little early before tiring late. Look for similar class and same distance – should be stronger.

Race 9: Beehunter – no luck in the straight again! Just needs some luck in running.
