Footy Betting Markets

In the AFL, Carlton have been the big stars this year in terms of outperforming their actual win / loss ratio at the betting line. The Carlton hierarchy clearly aren’t punters, as they’ve sacked the coach anyway!

In the NRL, we head into the uncertainty of Origin period.

Check out how your side went in this week’s footy betting market review.

AFL

Should Brendon Bolton have been sacked by Carlton?

Not according to punters.

While the Blues have dropped off a little in recent weeks, they still have an impressive record at the line this season, going 7-4 in their 11 games. What does this mean? Bolton and his team have outperformed the expectations of the market on most occasions. Only GWS has done it more with eight line covers, while Fremantle, Geelong and Brisbane are level with Carlton on seven covers.

If “the wisdom of crowds” is indeed a thing, then Carlton have pulled the wrong rein here. Does the crowd know better than those in the Carlton boardroom?

Elsewhere, Fremantle continue to impress and make their way up the line ladder. They might’ve needed some Michael Walters magic to get the win on Saturday, but they passed the betting market’s handicap with ease.

NRL

We’re now in Origin mode in the NRL, so uneven draws and byes will make things a little more complicated for a few weeks until everybody is back on an even keel. The teams with games in hand are marked in red below, so there’ll be some movement when things clear up fixture-wise.

As an aside, the Storm continue to confound the market… clearly doing “just enough” to get the results, as they’re atop the league table. They’ve only covered five of eleven lines however… so the punters aren’t being looked after as well as their fans are!
