While the Dragons four-point win over the Broncos last weekend was nothing to write home about, I think the Broncos played pretty well in that game. After a horrendous start where they conceded an unbelievably soft try in the opening minutes, the Broncos aimed up in attack and defence. They completed at 86% and only missed 16 tackles. Although it was another loss, and although Siebold’s sacking (sorry, resignation) this week has overshadowed it, that was actually the Broncos best effort in a long time.

While the Dragons still have plenty of issues, I do think their recent form has been downplayed by the market and there is some value at the minus here. The Dragons have won four of their last seven, with their three losses coming against Souths (lost by 8), Sharks (lost by 4) and Roosters (lost by 8). So they head into this match off the back of a solid couple of months of footy, where their effort has always been there.

While they’ve lost Vaughan through suspension, this is still a strong Dragons forward pack. Frizzel, McInnes and Hunt provide the experience in the middle, while Kerr is finally realising his potential and immense athleticism. Lawrie is a hard worker, while guys like Host and Ford have been playing surprisingly good footy in their recent outings. I have also been impressed by the work of Billy Britain in his time in the NRL, so I’m looking to see if he can provide some additional spark at 9 when Hunt tires.

And it’s the forwards where I think the Dragons have the edge. On top of missing captain Proctor and their Origin star Arrow, the Titans have now also lost their best forward of 2020 through suspension – Fotuaika.

Although he was gone in the pre-season, they’re also still without Ryan James, while Bryce Cartwright and Shannon Boyd have been moved on. When you think about what the Titans forward pack might have looked like during the pre-season… guys like James, Arrow, Proctor, Fotuaika, S Boyd and yes, even Cartwright, were the most likely options.

Instead, the Titans are now relying on guys like Hipgrave, Lisone, Stone, Jollife and Whitbread. While these guys are all having a real go at the moment, we saw last weekend that effort can only get you so far against a quality forward pack….missing 51 tackles against the Raiders, despite playing at home, I think the Titans forwards are very vulnerable here.

Although their defence has clearly improved, that’s now back-to-back weeks where they’ve conceded over 30 points. With the Dragons still playing with a faint glimmer of hope that they could sneak into 8th spot, and playing at home, I think the Dragons deserve to be slightly bigger favourties in this one.

Their attacking strike power out wide is impressive, with Aiken, Lomax, Pereira and Ravalawa all in great form, and Dufty continuing to provide chances. I like what Clune delivers and although I would rather see Sailor be given a few games at 6 ahead of Norman, his experience is probably needed in this one and just hope he can play sensible, high percentage footy tonight.

With the -9.5 still on offer, I am going to take that for two Units. While the Titans defence has waivered a bit in recent weeks, I think that they will be gallant here for most of the game and think that will keep the score line under the 44.5 that is being offered by some bookies.
