NRL Round 4: Storm vs Broncos (Friday)

The Storm are coming off a physically tough and emotionally draining game against the Panthers.

Eisenhuth is very unlikely to play, despite being named… and although he is not a household name, he has been very good for the Storm in the absence of Finucane and Kaufusi.

I understand why the Storm have been given such a big line to overcome here, with Papenhuyzen, Munster and Hughes all likely to cause the Broncos’ defence some big headaches. But with the exception of a short period against the Titans, the Broncos defence has not been as bad as is being made out.

Haas and Lodge are big inclusion for the Broncos pack. They add some much needed experience, and it allows Flegler and TPJ to come off the bench and provide some real impact.

Isaako is having a purple patch and Coates has turned into the strike weapon I always knew he would become, Farmworth had the best NRL game of his career and Niu is also a dangerous attacking player.

Although there is a long way to go in their quest for redemption, the Broncos will feel some pressure has been released after a strong win against the Bulldogs.

The Storm at home, off the back of two away losses, will be extremely hard to beat… but I do think the Broncos will make a game of this and stay competitive.

Predicted score Storm 25 – Broncos 12

NRL Round 3: Titans vs Raiders (Saturday)

The Titans are going from strength to strength and the only concern I have is their lack of a quality opposition so far this year.

While they looked impressive against the Broncos and the Cowboys, both teams are well below the quality of the Raiders. And when they played a well drilled and disciplined Warriors team in Round 1, they were comprehensively beaten.

But Brimson, Fifita, Big Tino and guys like Sami and Thompson are always dangerous with ball in hand, while guys like Wallace and Fotuaika do the hard stuff in the middle.

The Raiders will be without Tapine and Scott here, while both James and Kris must be in some doubt after their heavy concussions last weekend….so there’s perhaps a few more changes to come.

The game being moved out of Queensland helps the Raiders, but I had thought this as likely to occur and I still think the Titans are right in this match. I like the head start on offer.

The Raiders beat a hapless Wests at home, scraped home against the Sharks due to poor kicking from Townsend and then lost to the Warriors (albeit following a horror injury run).

So although I have high hopes for the Raiders in 2021, they have not hit their straps yet and need guys like Papalli, Croker, Lui, Wighton and CNK to hit their best form before I start betting on them to cover lines against teams like the Titans.

Predicted score Titans 18 – Raiders 18

NRL Round 3: Knights vs Dragons (Sunday)

The Knights choked last weekend, making far too many errors and blowing their late lead against a desperate Wests outfit.

This week they welcome back Green on the bench, who may end up starting on game day. They also welcome back To’a out wide, and their forward pack is close to full strength… so it’s a stronger looking side this week.

As for the Dragons, I am betting against them for two reasons:

Firstly, Hunt and Bird are big outs. Hunt has been in incredible form and is one of the form players of the competition. Without him, Clune and Norman will have to do a lot more playmaking and although both are good players, they will miss Hunt’s leadership and vision.

Secondly, the Dragons have had a soft draw so far. The teams they have played are currently ranked 12th, 14th and 16th… so this is their biggest challenge of the year.

On my ratings the Knights are about 8 to 10 points better on paper here, so throw in the home ground advantage and I think they should cover the line.

Predicted score Knights 24 – Dragons 12
