titans season preview

NRL expert Steve Green has put together his mammoth season preview for 2021. We’re running through every club, from his predicted wooden spooners to those he thinks will take out he premiership. Today it’s the Titans season preview.

2020 recap

The Titans’ 2020 season was one of two halves. At the end of Round 10 the Titans were second-last, with the second-worst defence in the competition. By Round 20, they had moved into ninth place and finished the season with five straight wins. Off the back of stellar form from Brimson and Fogarty, and some good performances by the likes of Proctor, Peachey and Wallace, the Titans showed everyone what they are capable of.

While there was a lot to be excited about for long suffering Titans fans, their last five wins were all against teams outside the top 8. So there is still plenty of improvement needed if they are to make the top 8 in 2021.

Titans season preview: Losses

While the Titans have lost Copley, Ryan James and Hipgrave, there is no one from their 2020 squad that leaves a massive hole to fill.

Titans season preview: Gains

With David Fifita and Big Tino joining the club, the Titans have two of the biggest off-season signings in the entire competition. Thrown in the underrates Ese’ese, and the Titans pack is looking like it will be hard to contain this year. Patrick Herbert is no slouch and provides much needed depth out wide.

Titans season preview: Rookie radar

Darius Farmer and Gregory Marzhew will likely get a run in 2021 and are exceptional talents, but Tony Sexton is the player that could become a key figure in this Titans lineup. With Ash Taylor’s form wavering in recent years, Sexton is an extremely talented 19-year-old half that could push for a starting spot if he proves himself in the Qld Cup.

Titans season preview: Players to watch

Ash Taylor looked to be enjoying his footy last year and there is no doubt he can create tries. But his fitness and defence is an issue, and Tanah Boyd and Toby Sexton will be pushing for a start in the halves at some point in the season.

Brian Kelly is one of the Titans’ few strike weapons out wide. While guys like Don and Corey Thompson are consistent contributors, Kelly will need to have another strong year if the Titans are going to score enough points to make the finals. He is a strong runner of the ball and terrific finisher. Just needs to learn when to use his outside man, as he does tend to hog it at times.

Tino Fa’asuamaleaui had a great season with the Storm, but he capped it off with some amazing form in his debut Origin season. Although all eyes will be on Fifita, who is more explosive and capable of scoring tries, Tino’s workload and experience from the Storm will be invaluable for this young Titans squad.

Titans season preview: Weaknesses

Their outside backs are still a little short on NRL experience. Guys like Patrick Herbert, Jonus Pearson, Phillip Sami and Treymain Spry will be called upon in 2021. None of these guys have shown they consistently has what it takes at the NRL level. Sami’s poor Origin debut was pretty hard to watch, but he has talent and should bounce back stronger.

Titans season preview: Strengths

Their forward pack is rock solid! While all eyes have been on Cam Smith and whether the world’s greatest ever player could shock the NRL world and line up for the Titans, I think they’re right to put their faith in Rein. He has always been a good player and I think his development was stunted by playing Peats there. Tanah Boyd is a good back-up, while Eric Clark could also get the job done. Their go-forward will be hard to contain and Brimson, a genuine superstar, will relish playing off the back of them.
